The Social Impact of IT
The use of IT has become increasingly widespread. At one time, only 40 or so years ago, IT was for big business, major universities, and governments and only a few people thought that the time would come when IT would be available to just about everyone.
ICT has had a positive impact on people. The greatest effect of ICT on individuals is the huge increase in access to information and services that go with the growth of the Internet. Some of the benefits of the access are better, and often cheaper, communications, such as VoIP phones and Instant Messaging. It also has increased opportunities for education, improved communication and it also allows people to participate in a wider, even worldwide, society. In the days before computers and ICT, if you wanted someone to teach you about a subject you would have needed to have been present in one the classes, but now information on particular subjects is available whenever needed by ICT. Many institutions have made some of their online courses available at no charge, further increasing opportunities for education such GCSE pod, Bitesize and Mymaths. So ICT has made the cost of education quite cheap and easy to access.
Internet has revolutionized the way we do our Shopping. Because of the numerous Advantages and Benefits of Shopping Online more and more people these days prefer Online Shopping over conventional shopping. There are many reasons why buying on the internet is the best option. The convenience of this method of shopping is the best about it. You can do shopping even a midnight, you do not have to wait in a line or wait till the shop assistant is ready to help you with your purchases.Online shops make comparison and research of products and prices possible. It is easier to avoid crowds especially during Festivals and Special events the crowds. Crowds also create a problem when it comes to finding a parking place nearby where you want to shop and going back to your vehicle later loaded with shopping bags. Buying Old or unused Stuff at low prices: Online Shops make it possible for us to buy old or unused stuff at rock bottom prices. If we want to buy antiques there is no better options than online stores.
IT has also allowed teleworking which is when a person works at home instead of working at an office. Teleworking is very beneficial as it allows the employee to have more flexible working hours and they can easily contact the organisation they are working for through the computer. This also decreases their daily expenses such as petrol costs as they don’t have to leave the house. Moreover due to IT, in major manufactures organisations machines play a very important role, they are much cheaper than hiring employees and they also wok 24/7. However IT has increased job opportunities as new businesses have opened related to IT such as, internet shops, phone shops, electric repair shops etc.
Although there are many positive impacts of the use of IT, there are many negatives effects as well, which are major issues in the society. The dependence of humans on IT is increasing as further advanced technology is being introduced which have a really bad effect on the lives of normal people.
One of the negatives impacts due to the use of IT is that people tend to choose online communication rather than having real time conversations which is making people become less social physically leading to them become introvert. Moreover the younger generation will also get addicted to games which will have a really bad effect on their education as they will not be able to focus on their studies. Young children who should play outside and remain active will be addicted to games which will be good for their health as they will be prone to eyestrain, mental stress and bad posture due to excessive use of computers. Moreover children who have access to the internet are exposed to pornography, online gambling and other harmful contents.
Another negative impact due to IT in organisations is that employees are losing their jobs as machines are being replaced and they are also more beneficial for the organisation. Mainly old people are being affected as they don’t have the latest skill to operate the machines and they will have to reskill themselves in order to be employed. IT is also causing jobs to become more deskilled as there is less creativeness and problem solving skills required because most of the work is carried out by the computer. I People use online banking which makes their transaction easier but, due to this criminals hack into account use the latest software. Moreover even if organisations have very high security on their network hackers are still able to steal confidential data and sell it to competitors, which is a great disadvantage for the organisation. The use of IT has also invaded people’s privacy as social networking sites has many personal information regarding its users which can be accessed by anyone through the internet. Furthermore pictures uploaded on the internet may be misused.
In conclusion, I believe that technology plays a very important part in our lives and that we are dependent on it. Therefore the existence of technology is very important as we will not be able to carry out are daily task without it such as communicating with people with the help of a cell phone. However we should try not to be fully dependent on technology as excessive use of it will cause us to become less social and active.
